Launched in the fall of 2004, Grouper Network’s original downloadable application GrouperTM introduced the first private user generated file-sharing network designed from the bottom up for consumer-created media. Since December 2005, Grouper 2.0 also enables people to share the videos and photos they've created anyway they want. Grouper is the first complete, peer-to-peer personal media sharing service that delivers users’ generated content to the audience of their choice - friends, family, or the world. Grouper not only gives users the tools to create, share and view videos in one place, it also makes it easy and fun. Grouper provides a simple user-interface and a sophisticated distributed backend technology to create the best user experience among video sharing services. Grouper Networks is located in Sausalito, California and employed lately 25 people.

In August 2006, Grouper was acquired by Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc. for a total consideration of 65 million USD.
